Application

Application Types + Windows

ELTE evaluates applications based on the funding track. The Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) track is a fully funded Hungarian government scholarship scheme that is evaluated first. The Self-Funded track is the main application window for fee-paying international students.

Difference between tracks:

  • Stipendium Hungaricum — Apply via the Tempus Public Foundation portal. Requires nomination from your home country's sending partner. Highly competitive, and applicants do not pay ELTE application fees.
  • Self-Funded (Regular) — The main application window for fee-paying international students. Applications are submitted via ELTE's DreamApply portal (apply.elte.hu). Reviewed on a rolling basis; most programs require an online oral entrance exam (usually via MS Teams).
  • Spring — For mid-year enrollment (starts in February). Very limited seats; mostly available for specific Master's or PhD programs rather than freshman Bachelor's entry.

Requirements

Entrance Exams (The ELTE Standard) ELTE does not require the SAT or ACT for Bachelor's admission. Instead, undergraduate admission relies on your high school background and a mandatory Entrance Exam administered by the specific Faculty.

  • Humanities/Social Sciences (BA): Typically an online oral interview (via MS Teams) assessing motivation, general knowledge of current global affairs, and English proficiency.
  • STEM Subjects (BSc): Programs like Computer Science or Mathematics require a written online test focusing on high-school level mathematics and logic, followed by an oral interview.

High-school / Academic grades

  • A recognized secondary school leaving certificate (High School Diploma, IB, A-Levels, or your local national equivalent).
  • Official transcripts translated into English.
  • A motivation letter and, in some cases, letters of recommendation.

English proficiency Undergraduate students must demonstrate proficiency to ensure they can follow lectures and write academic papers. If you completed your high school studies entirely in English, you can usually waive the formal exam by submitting a notarized medium-of-instruction certificate.
