Lebanese University (LU)

Faculty

LU is Lebanon's only public university, founded in 1951.

It enrols ~80,000 students — by far the largest in the country. The university spans 16 faculties and institutes, each with its own dean and regional branches across Mount Lebanon, the North, the Bekaa, and the South. Main campuses sit at Hadath (Rafic Hariri), Fanar, and Tripoli, with faculty branches in every governorate.

LU follows the French BMD system: Licence (3 years), Master (2 years), Doctorat (3 years). Engineering takes 5 years, Medicine 7, Pharmacy 5–6, and Dental Surgery 5.

Tuition is near-free for Lebanese students. The Faculty of Engineering holds EUR-ACE accreditation from CTI; FP, FEBA, FI, FPed, and FTHM are HCÉRES-accredited.

Per-program URLs cover 10 of the 17 academic units. Rows in the remaining 7 tables (FS, FPH, FLHS, FPed, FTHM, ISS, HIAES) link to the faculty landing page since LU does not expose individual program pages for them.

LU operates a two-track admission system unique among Lebanese universities:

  • Direct admission — for non-selective faculties (Sciences, Letters, Economics, Education, Information, Tourism, etc.). Students register directly after Lebanese Baccalaureate results are published.
  • Concours (CEE — Competitive Entrance Exam) — required for selective faculties: Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Architecture, Fine Arts, Public Health, and other selective programs. Each faculty runs its own CEE with separate dates.

Scholarships

University-offered scholarships

As a public university with near-free tuition, LU does not operate a traditional scholarship system. Financial support comes via:

  • Government subsidy — the Lebanese state covers the vast majority of educational costs for all enrolled students.
  • Faculty-specific exemptions — some faculties may offer fee waivers or reduced rates on a case-by-case basis (e.g., for students from low-income backgrounds).

Specific merit or need-based programs within LU faculties are not centrally documented. Contact individual faculty deaneries.

Requirements

SAT

LU does not require SAT for admission. Lebanese applicants are admitted based on the Lebanese Baccalaureate results (with faculty-specific minimum streams and averages) plus the CEE for selective faculties.

Students who have an SAT certificate may receive exemptions from language requirements:

  • In the French section, they may be exempted from studying language courses during the Common Trunk (first two years).
  • In the English section, they may be exempted from taking the English language entrance test.

Lebanese Baccalaureate

  • Required for all faculties. The eligible Baccalaureate stream and minimum average vary by faculty (e.g., Sciences stream for Engineering; Life Sciences for Medicine; any stream for FLHS or FEBA depending on the program).
  • Non-Lebanese curricula (IB, French Bac, A-Levels, etc.) must obtain an equivalence certificate from the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) before applying.

Competitive Entrance Exam (CEE)

Required for: Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Fine Arts & Architecture, Public Health, Agronomy/Veterinary Medicine, and some others. Exam content varies by faculty:

  • Engineering — Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

Note: The language test (FR/EN) has not been included in recent years.

  • Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy — Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics (taken after completing the first year at FS with ≥12/20 average)
  • Architecture, Fine Arts — Drawing, design portfolio, and general aptitude
  • Public Health — depends on track; usually Biology, Chemistry, general aptitude

Language proficiency

Language requirements vary by faculty and branch:

  • Faculty of Engineering — French and English (both required)
  • Faculty of Pharmacy — has parallel French and English sections
  • FS, FEBA, FFAA — primarily French/English with Arabic for general courses
  • FLHS, FLPAS, FPed, ISS — primarily Arabic with French electives; FLHS English/French/Arabic departments teach in their respective languages
  • FA, FPH — French primarily, with English-language tracks available

There is no centralized TOEFL/IELTS/DELF threshold — each faculty sets its own language requirements via internal placement tests.
